Manchester United have been dealt another blow after captain Nemanja Vidic could potentially be forced to spend time on the bench after sustaining a knee injury.
The centre-back was involved in an accident with FC Basel’s Marco Streller during the first half of the 2 – 1 loss to the Swiss side, which saw him stretched off with severe knee pain after twisting the joint. He later left the ground on crutches.
The extent of his injury has not yet been confirmed, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “We don’t know with Vidic, we think it’s certainly a medial ligament [injury].”
The accident took place during a disappointing night for the Reds which not only saw them lose the game but also lose their place in the Champions League. United’s local rivals Manchester City were also knocked out of the competition and both teams will instead play in the Europa League.
If Vidic is found to have injured his knee ligament, the Serbian ace could be out for up to four months.
Although knee injuries are quite common in sport, it is important to undertake an effective treatment programme to ensure that the joint heals itself properly. Depending on what type of injury a player has sustained, there are a number of different healing options to consider. For more serious injuries, a knee brace or support may be required and many physiotherapists also recommend using sports tape to encourage the healing process.
